OVERVIEW

 

Objective of the Analysis

The aim of this analysis is to provide a historical overview, from 2000 to 2025, of the impact of doping in sport, with a particular focus on athletics.

The analysis is divided into two parts. The first part, presented here, provides information on doping and its historical evolution by country, including data on doping substances, their classification and the sanctions imposed.

The second part, currently under development, will attempt to assess the impact of doping on athletic performance and results, should the available data indicate a significant effect.

Methodology

The report, created in Google Data Studio (Looker Studio), allows the data to be segmented by several parameters, including countries, type of substances, time period, gender, and so on. This makes it possible to perform different comparisons by applying the appropriate filters and analysing the data from the desired perspective.

The report contains three pages, which can be accessed by clicking the titles in the top navigation bar.

Although the layout adapts to the viewing interface, we recommend using a computer or, at least, a tablet for the best viewing experience.

PAGE I : Doping by Sports

 

On the first page, we compare doping cases across sports during the period analysed (2000–2025), in order to assess the relative impact across different sports. As we will see, Athletics ranks third, an unfortunate position, surpassed only by Weightlifting and Cycling.

CONCLUSION

 

We are not in favour of the use of doping to alter the natural outcome of competition, nor are we satisfied with Athletics’ current position on this blacklist. Official bodies have taken measures to combat this problem, and we will see how effective they are in the years to come.

Next month, we expect to have the second part of this report available, in which we will attempt to assess the influence, if any, of doping on countries’ results in the Top Lists over the past 25 years.
